Despacito was first released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi in the year 2017 and was the number one streamed track in just 6 months. The combination of reggaeton and pop music did not just draw interest back to this genre but it also brought attention to Latin music as a whole. Billboard's Top 100 had four songs mainly in Spanish as of 2016, in contrast to just two songs in 2015. During the height of Despacito's popularity in 2017 however 19 predominantly Spanish songs made it to the top 100 as well, and by 2020 there were 41 such songs. Justin Bieber re-mixed Despacito with a Spanish version in 2017. In the year following, famous artists started working together with reggaeton groups. Drake teamed with Bad Bunny to create MIA (2018), while Madonna worked on Medellin with Maluma (2019). In the year 2020, some Reggaeton performers were expressing displeasure about the advancing of their genre to the mainstream. However, a younger generation, such as Rauw Alejandro was keen to continue the evolution. He used elements from other styles and electronic music.
